To test his unconditional loyalty, God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. But before the patriarch could harm the boy, who lay half-lying on a sacrificial altar, an angel intervened. A ram appeared in the thorny bushes to sacrifice its life instead. As the crossed logs suggest, the fortunately averted sacrifice of Isaac was interpreted as a premonition of Christ's death. This painting by Cornelis de Vos and Jan Wildens (who was responsible for the background landscape) was therefore possibly originally intended as an altarpiece in a church.
